In addition to smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, some states also require landlords to provide working fire extinguishers to all their rental properties. For example, in California, a landlord is not legally obliged to furnish individual fire extinguishers to their tenants. However, there does need to be a certain amount of extinguishers available in public areas of the property. That includes the hallways, building lobbies, and even the parking garages.
