2.The Biltmore Estate

Welcome to North Carolina. In 1903, the famed Wright Brothers first successfully flew the Kitty Hawk and where the Vanderbilt family built their architectural legacy. The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, is the largest privately-owned residence in the United States. They made it between 1889 and 1895 for the industrialist George Washington Vanderbilt II. Renowned Architect Richard Morris Hunt was commissioned to design the residence, while Frederick Law Olmsted oversaw the Vanderbilt’s near 125,000 acres’ landscape design. The home is truly massive, at over 170,000 square feet. The descendants of the Vanderbilt’s still own it. Furthermore, it is one of the most famous examples of the Gilded Age mansions of the U.S.

The Biltmore Estate is a French chateau-style mansion. The home is so massive they had to build brick factories onsite to aid in the enormous construction project. The development required the labor of thousands of stonemasons, bricklayers, and more. Fashioned after some of the most exquisite chateaus of Europe, The Biltmore features steeply pitched roofs, sculptural ornamentation, and turrets. The asymmetrical four-story limestone façade stands at more than 375 feet in height. Equally as magnificent as the exterior, the interior, covering more than 4 acres of floor space, contains 250 rooms, including 65 fireplaces, 43 bathrooms, and 35 bedrooms. Up next, we travel from The Biltmore to The Breakers. You will not be disappointed. The Vanderbilt’s appreciated great architecture.
