ABOUT

At New Vision Weight Loss Clinic , we have a unique perspective on getting healthy and losing weight. Here, it is more about making long term lifestyle changes vs. enrolling in just another “fad diet.” Unfortunately, it is easy to fail when trying to make healthier changes because either the initial goal set is unrealistic or the manner in which one attempts to reach that goal is unrealistic for long term maintenance. We have all seen this vicious cycle of setting unhealthy goals, strictly restricting caloric intake, excessively exercising, and still not meeting one’s own expectations. It is so easy to get discouraged in this seemingly never-ending-cycle and not only stop losing weight, but actually end up gaining more than one’s initial start weight. This cycle not only harm one’s physical well-being, but also one’s mentality and emotional state. Each of these factors are important in obtaining and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

At New Vision Weight Loss Clinic, we take a more holistic approach. We will help you succeed by customizing a nutrition and fitness plan just for your schedule, so that being healthy becomes a lifestyle. We strive to not only help you lose weight, but to focus more on what we like to call “non-scale victories.” These non-scale victories help one prioritize all aspects of leading a healthy lifestyle without feeling you are defined by a number on the scale.

We encourage our clients to refrain from obsessing about the scale, but instead:

•Focus that attention on preventing cardiovascular disease

•Focus on preventing hypertension or lowering blood pressure if it’s already elevated

•Focus on preventing diabetes or lowering one’s blood glucose or A1C levels if already DM diagnosed

•Focus on preventing high cholesterol levels or lowering those levels if already diagnosed with them elevated

•Focus on measuring inches, as those may decrease without the number on the scale changing very much

At New Vision Weight Loss Clinic, we guarantee to provide unending support and encouragement every step of the way, while you take charge of your health.

We are dedicated to each and every individual and promise to stay up-to-date on all the latest health recommendations, ensuring you receive the highest level of care.

We pride ourselves on the amount of time we spend with each individual going through the different food groups, so that you can get a better understanding of the nutrition your body needs. We will make certain macronutrient recommendations based on your current lifestyle and your health goals. We will also supply you with a dietary diary to track your current food and fluid habits; this will help you become more aware of what you are consuming and will help us to give you better dietary recommendations. Additionally, we will provide you with a dietary menu so that the nutrition counseling doesn't stop once you leave our office.

We understand that not everyone has an hour each day to commit to the gym and working out, so we will help you design a fitness plan specific for your needs, whether that is at the gym or at home with no equipment.

We recognize that getting healthy takes more than just physical work, and this is why our holistic approach is unique. In order for your success to be achieved and maintained, we help you find a balance between your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

New Vision Weight Loss Clinic is locally owned by a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner right here in Knoxville, Tennessee. For you, this means that your visit is very personable and that your satisfaction with our service is of highest priority.

People and our service to them is our bottom-line, and for that reason, we offer a very affordable program which includes a free consultation with no office fees, ever. While we do not accept payment plans, we do offer a few in-office ways to financially make it easier for you. We want improved health and results to be your priority, not how much the program costs.

RISK FACTORS OF OBESITY

At New Vision Weight Loss Clinic we recognize that while sedentary lifestyle is the most common cause of obesity, there are some other predisposing risk factors that could put one at an increased risk of being overweight or obese. These include:

Genetics

There is a lot of contradicting data about whether certain genes play a factor in increasing one’s chance of being obese. The older data states there is a direct relationship between the two, while more recent data from the Center of Disease Control (CDC) states it is a combination of certain genes and outside factors (physical inactivity or abundant food supply) that increase one’s susceptibility to obesity.

Family Lifestyle

According to research by the National Institute of Health (NIH), it appears that an individual is more likely to gain weight (or become obese) if a close friend or family member has increased their weight. For instance, if one sibling were to become obese, it increased the other sibling's chances of becoming obese by 40 %. Similarly, it concluded if one spouse became obese, it increased the other's chances of becoming obese by 37 %.

Medical Problems

There are certain medical problems that can increase one’s risk of being obese. These include under-active thyroid (hypothyroidism), polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), and Cushing’s syndrome.

1.Hypothyroidism is a condition where the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. This results in feeling fatigued and weak while slowing down one’s metabolism.

2.Polycystic ovarian syndrome is a condition affecting ~ 5 - 10% of females of child-bearing age. In this condition, there is an increase in androgen hormones, which can cause weight gain, reproductive problems, and excessive hair growth.

3.Cushing’s syndrome is a condition in which the body makes too much of a hormone called cortisol. The excess of this hormone can cause weight gain, central obesity, and a round-like face.

Medications

There are certain medications which can increase your appetite, cause you to retain extra water-weight, and/or slow down the rate at which calories are burned in the body. These include seizure medications, antidepressant medications, and most commonly known, corticosteroids.

Age

As one gets older, he or she tends to lose muscle mass (especially if not active). When this happens, that loss of muscle can slow down the rate at which the body burns calories. According to the NIH, most women gain at least 5 pounds during menopause and have an increased amount of fat tissue around the waist.

Lack of Sleep

According to the NIH, research has proven a direct link between lack of sleep and obesity.

1.Without a consistent sleep pattern, there is a direct imbalance of two hormones: ghrelin (makes you feel hungry) and leptin (makes you feel full). When you don’t get enough sleep, or enough consistency, your levels of ghrelin increase, while your leptin levels decrease.

2.Sleep also affects how the body reacts to insulin. Insulin is the hormone which controls your glucose (sugar) levels. Again, without enough sleep or too much inconsistency with sleep, blood glucose levels may rise, increasing the risk for type 2 diabetes.

3.Those who sleep fewer hours on a consistent basis were shown to consume foods that were both higher in calories and carbohydrates (leading to weight gain).

Smoking Cessation

According to the NIH, there are two main reasons that smoking cessation results in weight gain. Nicotine raises the rate at which the body burns calories, so when you stop smoking, there are usually fewer calories burned. The second reason is that food usually tastes better after the cessation smoking.

PROGRAM PHASES

PHASE 1: NEW BEGINNING / ACTIVE WEIGHT LOSS

This phase is where you will have the most active weight loss. Caloric intake is more strictly limited and focus is placed on resetting your metabolism. This has also been referred to as the “detox” phase, due to detoxifying the body of bad and processed foods. You will retrain your body to not crave nutritionally empty foods. Caloric intake restriction will be based on gender, height, and activity level, but a diet high in protein, moderate or low in carbohydrates, low in sugars, and low in fats is typically recommended. We do have in-office meal plans free of charge to aid you through this first phase and we will monitor your progress weekly or monthly (based on your availability). Exercise will be light to moderate in this phase as you work to increase your endurance.

PHASE 2: TRANSITION

This phase will help you with the transition from the weight loss phase to the weight maintenance phase with a focused emphasis on increasing your metabolic rate through exercise and diet. This is where you will reintroduce certain foods back into your diet that you had eliminated in phase one. We are each unique and our bodies biochemically different, requiring varying amounts to eat, but the goal is to establish a balanced eating plan. Exercise is encouraged to be more moderate in this phase and directly reflects allowance of caloric intake. This phase generally lasts 6 weeks and we monitor your progress weekly or monthly (based on your availability).

PHASE 3: HEALTHY LIVING / LONGTERM MAINTENANCE

This is a very important step in your journey where you have achieved your health and fitness goals. From here, it is all about learning to maintain hormonal and metabolic balance. Research has proven that the first year is critical for long-term success. During this time we are available for continued nutritional support and will monitor you monthly, helping you continue on your long-term path of success.

NUTRITION

At New Vision Weight Loss Clinic we take a customized, comprehensive approach to help each individual achieve and maintain their health and fitness goals. This includes providing you with nutritional tools to help you every step of the way. We will start with the basics, where our team will spend time educating you on the differences between proteins, carbohydrates, sugars, and fats, and will give you a detailed handout to take home with you. We offer multiple nutritional handouts including a snack-reference guide and a detailed meal plan. We also offer specific meal plans (low-carb, low-fat, or Mediterranean) for a small additional fee.

We are also proud to now be offering our personalized New Vision line of protein supplements in-office! This includes: protein bars, protein shakes, protein shots, protein chips/crisps, and protein thermogenic mixes! Eating healthy and on-the-go has never been so easy with these delicious supplements!

Some would say the solution of losing weight is easy: eat less and exercise more. While the rationale of consuming less and burning more makes perfect sense, it is unfortunately not always that simple. Human behavior is very complex and made up of various biological influences, including: genetics, neural circuits, and hormones.

THE "BASIC" EQUATION

•More energy IN than energy OUT over time = weight gain

•More energy OUT than energy IN over time = weight loss

•The same amount of energy IN and OUT over time = weight maintenance

COMPOUNDED PRESCRIPTIVE MEDICATIONS

Compounded medications are nothing new, but have caught controversy recently due to various reasons and unfortunately some due to certain individuals/providers/pharmacies missing out on money due to their lack of production and coverage.

Over the past several years, a variety of medications have been put on “backorder,” as well as insurance companies refusing to pay for them or charging high premium payments for them. When this happens, particularly medications being inaccessible to patients who need them, legally, compounded pharmacies are allowed to intervene even if the medications are “patented.” The reason for this is simple - individuals need a medication for various reasons (diabetes, weight loss, hormone replacement, etc) but are not able to access those due to lack of production or even larger, lack of insurance coverage. A lot of company insurance plans only cover certain medications (blood pressure, cholesterol, reflux, etc), and most of the time, weight loss medications are NOT one of them. Regardless, the need is obviously still there. Should patients go without their medications because pharmacies don’t have them in stock? Should patients go without their medications because their insurance only covers a small part and they’re still responsible for a hefty monthly bill? No. Absolutely not. EDUCATION is KEY.

New Vision Weight Loss Clinic is proud to offer alternatives and we are very particular in the pharmacies we use.

Our primary compounding pharmacy uses l-carnitine with our semaglutide and tirzepatide.

Legitimate compounding pharmacies are safe. In the case of who we use, they are government regulated pharmacies who undergo vigorous sterility testing. They are supervised by licensed pharmacist(s), physicians, and even third-party professionals to ensure their safety and efficacy. Compounding pharmacies ARE regulated by the FDA and overseen by the state board.

The FDA ensures no compounding operation may mislabel or misrepresent compounded medications or their ingredients.

The FDA oversees compounding operations to ensure they meet the necessary regulations and guidelines for compounding. If a compounding operation fails to meet these requirements or violates their obligations under the FDCA, they are then subject to all the requirements for conventional manufacturers. This means that non-compliant manufacturers must then pay for the verification and testing necessary for FDA approval before resuming business.

While many people, including misinformed healthcare professionals, may hold some common misconceptions about compounded medications, it’s important to separate myth/rumors from reality and consider the value of custom-compounded prescription drugs - especially those that are needed but not easily accessible.

Bottom line - when needed medications are inaccessible to our patients, we should fight to ensure they still get what they need. And instead of trying to spread false information - our goal should be the same in helping our community, enabling others to become healthier, and equipping our patients with the nutrition and the tools they need.

So if you come across a healthcare provider trying to mis-represent that medications aren’t safe or coming from other countries other than the United States — keep in mind, they’re likely getting kick-backs from the main manufacturers and therefore, would discourage anyone using anything other than those made by the manufacturers themselves.

At New Vision Weight Loss Clinic, we love our patients and won’t stop fighting for them to receive nothing but the best of care and access to what they need — and if that means a compounded medication they can afford — so be it. Your overall health is our priority and we’ll help you do whatever it takes to obtain, maintain, and sustain that.

And as a side note, if any healthcare professional gives you semaglutide in anything other than a WEGOVY PEN, it’s “compounded.” So make sure you know what you’re getting and paying for. If it’s in a syringe, it’s compounded. Wegovy ONLY comes in a pen. We’re happy to be transparent in offering semalgutide, but be weary of those claiming to offer name-brand “Wegovy” in a syringe. That’s not real Wegovy and they’re not being transparent about what you’re paying for or injecting.
